Vision Quest

Wow, wow, wow. I don’t know what so say really. As I happened to flip through the september issue of Wired I came upon this fascinating story about bionic vision. The article pretty much says it all.

Five years from now I would be damned if I haven’t got an option for an advanced version of this implant. As the article notes, the technology doesn’t stop at enabling the blind to see - we could feed the microprocessor and implant with any form of graphic information. Forget tv and computer monitors - we could all interface directly with the VGA port of the latest Matrox card or whatever. And the use of x-ray/ir cameras and extended lenses sure tickles the imagination.

They still need to shrink the actual implant though so that it can interface with individual neurons. It would also be great if the entire microprocessor could be concealed within the eye socket, and additionally harness heat or chemical energy from the organism.

Where do you volunteer anyway?
