The future of Stem Cell research

I should normally have posted this to the “linkbox” but I got a bit worked up .. ehr .. that is worked up MORE THAN USUAL. Anyway, this is the article in question: Reeve Blames Church, Bush for Research Obstruction.
Not that it is any real news. It’s just that it is the first time someone as well-known and respected as Christopher Reeve makes a statement about the halting of the stem cell research programs. Countless individuals involved in the research have of course expressed their disapproval over and over again, but to no avail. I mean, if anyone understands the possibilites of stem cell research, it is indeed Reeves. How would you feel if someone took away the only foreseeable option to getting out of the wheelchair that has become a prison for life? And on top of this knowing that it was done on demand of certain religious interests.

Let us vanquish those religious fools once and for all! I am so very tired of seeing creationist ideas seep back into the american society. And seeing religion pass judgement on issues of life and death - like they know what is best for us. Separating body and “soul” - witless!
Put simply I think it is time for us (the opposition to religion) to strengthen our positions. It is time to fight back. We were once burned at the stake. Good men and women suffered and died for their “blasphemy” .. isn’t it time we pay them back in their own currency? Normally I am a fairly sane person who rarely advocates violence but some things are just too important to waste debating. Especially when I am right. I am also so very tired of belonging to the camp that has to compromise.
Never argue with fools, people will never be able to tell you apart .. Or as once put by one Richard Dawkins: “Religion is a virus of the mind”. The interpretation is free and I certainly see religion as a “contagious idea” that preys on our weaknesses.

Another major problem is of course that the american nation is placed in a difficult situation. How can a nation that is bound by a free constitution listen to traditionalist views and just one of many voices in this matter? This is another issue where the US is alienating itself from the rest of the world. Just look at what the US and its good buddies the Vatican and fundamentalist Islamic nations managed to do at the UN conference in South Africa a couple of weeks ago with respect to the issue of human rights and abortion. It deeply saddens me …

I’ll be returning to this debate of religion and its consequences in the future .. you have seen nothing yet. Coming soon is a discussion on the history and future of religions. Why the ideas are so contagious and what society would be like without this giant amoeba clutching us.
