Like so much else this season it is a matter of faith I suppose. I’m thrilled by the possibility but sad that the task has been left with questionable organizations like the Raelians. I suppose that their faith and determination could very well speed things up compared to government funded operations BUT had any legitimate research institute been funded for this we would already been way past this little hurdle. And hurdle is all that it is. Just producing the a human child with a “borrowed” genome (I really hate the word “clone” when referring to entire genomes or organisms!) is another “Dolly”, another publicity stunt. If they can make it live to see its maturity, then I will truly be impressed.
It’s like landing on the moon. The actual landing is irrelevant but the splash effects are staggering. It gives people hope and dreams. And the scientific race can often spawn new technologies and methods. It’s very much like a war in that sense.
So, while I lean more towards bionics, this is still a thrilling development, even if perfecting the idea (including educating the public) will take another decade.
