Server project …

HTTP Server (mimer.no-ip.com) port 80 is

I nabbed the Online Server Status script from Schweb Design. Very cool indeed. It uses an IMG tag to call upon a PHP page that checks any type of server. For example:

Microsoft.com is
RedHat.com (FTP port 21) is
Serveroffline.com is

I realized that I have a heap of spare parts that could come to better use in a permanent server for example. It all depends. I would of course have to get some sort of chassis for the setup and I will have to either conceal it so that it wont bother me or make it really, really quiet. I remember that there was a distinct squealing sound last time I ran the hardware and even with the CPU fan or any other moving parts connected.
I can’t use the HTPC because I don’t want it running 24/7. I’m embarrassed to admit that I still have a cooling problem with this setup so .. running it as extensively as this would be suicide.
I can’t use the Main setup either since I prefer to keep it clutter-free and I can’t keep it running as much as I would like to at the moment. Just to name one of the problems here, there is the matter of the failing hard drive for example. Not only would I prefer that it didn’t fail until I’ve had time to sort out and burn a couple of things, the dying unit makes a lot of funny sounds that could pretty much wake the dead. And .. even if I’m not a big fan of the Unix line of operating systems I realize that I can’t host any of this on a Windows box. While there are indeed a couple of very good web servers available for win32, many of the community scripts are unable to run on a win32 platform. So unless you’re just going to run this one script and you know that it tolerates a win32 environment, you’re pretty much out of luck. I mean, just a simple thing like security and chmod .. aargh!

Right now I’m testing the Apache server on the Main setup anyway. Don’t expect it to stay online nor does it host anything of interest.
