Just as I suspected. There are indications that US intelligence agents are and have been posing as foreign journalists in Baghdad. No link or anything because no one will of course admit it … ever.
This is not unlike the time when US intelligence infiltrated the UN weapons inspectors. And it makes sense since it’s a perfectly plausible way of getting westerners into Baghdad.
As much as it remains a brilliant move it also hallows the credibility of certain parties. There was a reason, you know, that Iraq expelled the UNSCOM in the late 90’s. So much for playing by the rules. One could assume the US has actually got a plan for this. First make Iraq look like they are not complying with the UN and then gear up for an attack. And when intelligence no longer can operate under the mandate of the UN it would be practical to conceal the activities by posing as journalists.
Not only does it allow the intelligence gathering to continue but it also makes Iraq look bad when they expel the covert agents. The rest of the world couldn’t possibly know what is going on and would assume that Iraq is a bunch of totalitarian tyrants who dislike free press. It’s a win - win situation for the US.
Kind of makes you wonder about the recent threats made to Syria and Iran. It looks better if they strike first of course and in the end it is all inevitable anyway, right?. At least if you’ve set your mind on ridding the world of “evil”. The end always justifies the means, right?
The Iraqis know this of course and this is probably the reason they have cracked down on various reporters over the last couple of weeks. And Iraqi agents are tagging news crews for a very good reason. Now, what about all that talk of how it’s against the rules to pose as civilians? ![]()
