Note: Finally got my mother a basic gsm cell phone. Siemens A50. No frills, but who needs them. Certainly not I. And it’s unlikely that she will either. I had to practically force this one on her for that matter. Oh well …
One of the advantages of the A50 is that the shell also holds the display window, i.e. if you break it you can replace it. Other than that it is, as I said, pretty much no frills.
By “frills” I mean GPRS (3G) for example … While the technology is expanding here in Sweden it is virtually useless for common people. The bandwidth costs are too high of course (no surprise there!) and the available bandwidth is almost always too low. Also, the GPRS service operates intermittently in some areas.
And then there is the problem with the phones themselves. What are you going to do with all this new bandwidth (if it works of course!) as long as you have a display windows the size of a matchbox? Also, you have to sign up for a special account, it is currently impossible to operate the damn things on a card phone alone. It figures.
Oh, come on … try again when you have a product ready with at least a 10” screen or the ability to hook it up to an ocular implant or something. And on a flatrate basis. Until then I’m happy just being able to call people.
Likewise, I’m not a big fan of the new series of multimedia phones. It’s kids’ stuff you know. If you want a digital camera for example you should be browsing through the $700 line of products. What’s the point of having to drag a camera pack around if you know that the photos will be all crap. Duh! I should know, that kind of thinking has ruined quite a few vacations for me. Do it right or not at all. That’s my philosophy.
Except when it comes to exams perhaps. Hehe.
