It seems that my Yamaha SCSI writer has bought the farm so to speak. It just keep locking up at the beginning of every burning (or simulated) session. The drive is still able to read discs just fine so I assume that I am dealing with a malfunction that will be difficult, if not impossible, to correct.
It’s a good thing that writers are drastically cheaper nowadays compared to when I got this unit. I payed like $330 for this 8x unit about three years ago (and now you can get a good writer for like $40). All this hassle just to get a SCSI interface. I chickened out when it came to the rest of the system though and this unit is to date the ONLY SCSI unit that I’ve had. SCSI is nice of course but I feel I might have gone overboard in a home user environment …
Unless I found a miraculous cure, I’ll be back with IDE next week. Damn. I really wanted to avoid running more than one unit on every IDE channel. I might be forced to get a Highpoint IDE expansion card now. The SATA connectors on my Asus MB are still pretty much useless due to today’s price level and availability of SATA units. Sigh.
Edit: Hmmm. Seems to be working again. Don’t know ahy though. I tried to use Fireburner and TAO with no problems. Then I installed the latest Nero v5.5.10.20 and did a DAO test (even though v5.5.10.7 has been working in the past). One thing I noticed was that Nero was set for DAO/96. However, I know I have used that option in the past and DAO/96 is in fact the default DAO mode for the Yamaha 8824S. Will reboot a couple of times and repeat a test burn after each reboot to see if the problem remains.
