Mulling over Planetside

There are a couple of new screens over at Planetside Universe. Still no word on the beta [SEE LINK BELOW]. The game is about to go gold from what I understand (May 19th?). Still, rumours say that the recent stress testing didn’t go all that well. Servers basically crumbled under the increased load and the gameplay became terribly laggy.

I’m not pleased with the idea of a subscription based game. Of course it all depends on exactly what the fee will be but I doubt it will be cheap enough. What are people willing to pay for online games? What do other games charge? I don’t think I would be willing to pay more than $2-3 a month anyway.
From what I’ve seen at Planetside Universe, the monthly fee will be closer to £12-15. Holy fucking shit. The game itself will be £50 as usual and MAYBE include ONE free month. Playing the game for one year will be about £200 in this case. That is pretty extreme. Without doing any complicated forecasts, I can safely say that most people wont tolerate this. It is also unlikely that it is this costly to keep the servers running.

Maybe someone will hack the game and launch a separate game world for us cheapskates. I firmly believe that online gaming should be virtually free once you have purchased a game. Of course I never buy games. But I would have to with a game like Planetside. I doubt that I would buy the game AND get a subscription though. Enough is enough. I’m holding me breath here. It has been quite some time now since there has been a good game release.

About the beta: Apparently us Europeans got screwed over with the beta. See this. Really nasty of Sony. Now I’m sure to pirate the damn game. DO YOU HEAR ME?! Gahg!
The UK was included though, and the reason for this being that the devs wanted to be sure that everyone understood english. I mean come ooooooon! Whats with all these localizations all of a sudden? When I was a child I HAD to learn english to be able to take part in computer games and watch movies. I think this is demeaning. And in the long run detrimental to the ability to spread english as a common language for our planet. Seriously. I’m really worried. Plus I didn’t get picked for the beta. GAAAAGRGRHRHRGHH!

All in all I’m pretty pissed right now.
