Planetside, first impressions

Ok. First of all I have to complain a bit. It’s silly of Fileplanet so supply one GIANT 1366 MB file instead of splitting it up, or at least provide a zipped archive of the 2 beta CDs (maybe it’s 3 CDs in reality?). To begin with I had to clear my C: drive in order for the installer to start. It needed 1366 MB temp disk space. Gee. What a surprise. This is probably a result of Fileplanet’s “clever” compression routines. Really stupid of them to do this. How many ppl have 1.4GB free on their C: drive? Not to mention having the patience to tolerate the decompression. Ok .. anyway … after a bit of uninstalling and temporarily decreasing swap file storage I was on my way …

I realize that ppl have been playing this game for quite some time now. I wish I had been selected for the beta but SONY obviously doubted the linguistic skills of anyone outside of the US or GB. It’s as much their loss at it is mine. AFAIK the game will ship in a week or so. Now, is it worthy of all the fuzz?

You can tell that this game is under heavy development. Even though I downloaded the beta yesterday I had to endure some 60+ minutes of updating critical files. At least 160-170 MB of additional files to download then. Geez! But who cares when you have already completed the 1366 MB installer. You have to place it all in perspective.
The Station Launchpad seems easy enough to get around in btw. Big easy to read buttons, a sleek interface and easily accessible server and patch stats. Nothing to complain about so far.

Edit: I have the game up and running now. I feel like a real noobie. The game is tricky to get into and it takes time to level up. Plus it takes ages to get anywhere (unless you’ve got your own private dropship driver). I’ll be back with a real evaluation tomorrow.
