I never got around to fixing this. It’s one of those problems that come and go over time. It doesn’t show up in all games and it doesn’t show up all the time. Thus far it has been symptomatic that the nforce sound bug manifests itself about 10-20 min into a game. And it only happens in games. Like Battlefield 1942 for example.
It seems that most ppl blame the APIC irq feature. But I don’t feel like disabling apic in the bios and re-install windows. I would rather have a bug fix from NVIDIA. And I KNOW that one is coming. It’s just that they work too damn slow.

Note: This is not a unique problem. Crackling and static is likely to occur with other hardware (mainboards / scards) as well. It’s just that this has been consistent with all NVIDIA nforce2 based mainboards. And under special conditions.
