Actually I have been wondering about this for quite some time now. I found this old essay on what is dubbed Trek Marxism. LOL. But it’s very true, the Star Trek post TOS economy does resemble marxist theory in many ways. I’m just not sure whether it was intended. Marxism is in many ways highly idealistic. Take your time to read the other essays on the site as well. They are equally hilarious and mind provoking.
So, despite all the techno babble that makes up a typical Star Trek episode, THE most unbelievable thing about it is the humans that populate this idealistic part of the universe. They are in fact not humans (in a bio-sociological context) at all since they have given up one of the most fundamental aspects of their nature. Namely their territorial behavior and the acquisition (expansion) of things (like money).
I’m still waiting for the next series that will supposedly show the fall of the Federation. But I’m guessing not even Trek script writers are lame enough to blame a flourishing market economy.
