Someone prompted me to try it the other day. I was sceptical, thinking that is was just another fairytale. So I looked it up. I was curious why it actually worked. And why the heating was so vital (the milk will be heated anyway when it enters the digestive system).
From what I can tell the answer to this question is this. It’s a question of faith. Theoretically, hot fluid will increase your body temperature slightly and that will make it easier to fall asleep. Also, the essential amino acid L-Tryptophan (which is abundant in dairy products) is released by the heating. Tryptophan is later assimilated and incorporated into the neurotransmitter Serotonin (which regulates sleep among other things). Note that none of this guarantees a good night’s sleep though. It just helps you fall asleep (at best). A possible third reason to why this works is that you wont go to bed with and empty stomach (which would make it hard to enjoy the resting period). The effect for most ppl however seems to be marginal.
