The week in downloads

A measly 15 GB. Shame on me.

Started to really dig into Ghost in the shell: Stand-alone project. This series is so damn beautiful. And amazingly well put together. Being an offspring from the GITS movie which in turn originates from the GITS manga, many had prophesied its failure. But not so.

And did I mention that I took a whack at Firefly? Maybe I did. I can understand why the show is cancelled. Mainly so because it’s a show about nothing. Nice camera work, pretty music and stylish. But without content. I twist in agony when I think of what could have been. Firefly reminds me of Cowboy Bebop in some strange way. Maybe it’s just the Western theme. Maybe it’s the seemingly ragtag crew.

Despite having already seen the entire Space: Above and Beyond series, I couldn’t help myself. It’s a damn shame this show went off the air while far worse series endured. Probably the least sci-fi-ish sci-fi ever. Easily one of my top ten favorite TV series of all times. The cast is well rounded and the characters are interesting. Even the punch lines work. Zero embarrassment factor. Also, the CGI shots are amazing, especially considering that the show is from 1995-1996.

Odyssey 5. Another obscure but brilliant sci-fi (do you see a pattern emerging?). Nice to see that Peter “Robocop” Weller is alive and well and that there are still hope for original ideas and solid script writing. Too bad the series was cancelled. The good news is that the ratings were outstanding and that some major players want to see O5 back on the air. Maybe some other cable channel will pick up the show. After all it has only been dead for less than a year and there are unaired episodes in storage.

I’ve also looked closer at Dead Like Me which is a new promising comedy / sci-fi series by Bryan Fuller (did a lot of work on Star Trek Voyager). Time will tell. The pilot was extremely well put together though. Might be another “Buffy”. The show is basically centered on a somewhat socially dysfunctional girl that can’t find a decent job and is generally tired of everything. When she is accidentally killed, she is hired as a Grim Reaper. Simple as that. Very talky series and lots of quirky dialogue. Kind of like Ally McBeal or Amelie from Montmartre if you know what I mean. Some ppl really hate that though …
