Student insolence

I feel like I have gotten to know my Chinese friends quite well. I am doing my best to absorb and understand Chinese culture and also getting to know the Swedish dorm culture. Guess which one is more difficult to comprehend and adapt to? Could it be a culture on the other side of the planet or the culture that exists no more than 4 km from here? Ok, that is not even a rhetorical question …
I have never in my life seen anything as utterly destructive as student dorms. I guess they are more or less the same in every western country. It wouldn’t be fair to claim that Sweden is an exception. But lets face it. Most of the time dorms are a dump. And many of the ppl who inhabit these forsaken halls are in my professional opinion in dire need of some counseling. Maybe drug rehab as well.

I think it’s a disgrace to subject master students to this kind of treatment. Especially foreign master students. And especially students from a culture that still is a bit unaccustomed to the kind of loose life that students lead here. It’s a veritable kindergarten for spoiled students with some serious issues. The real problem is of course with neighbours who are too forward. Some ppl seem to think that it is more important to participate in the parties organized by the student union than to complete practical tasks like sending letters and finding your way around. I wasn’t fond of student unions and impertinent students before and this was kind of the last nail in the coffin.

I’m a bit tired of apologising for the rude behavior of my countrymen. And I am not overreacting here. There is no excuse for bad behavior.

You might be interested to know that its no better here at UCLA. It takes someone that’s very disciplined to actually study and learn in that environment. We hear about the successes. The failures, and there are many, are anonymous. Too bad.

Yes, indeed, I find it interesting. I should really look deeper into this “problem”. It is of course nothing new but I wonder if this is something that has become worse in the last couple of years.

I find it a bit unnerving since the individuals who go through university education are mostly those that later shape the future of all. As such I would hold them to a higher standard.
