Via CDFreaks: First look on the Plextor PX-708A dual format DVD recorder

This is very good news for anyone looking to buy a dvd recorder. Like myself. The bar has all of a sudden been raised quite a bit when it comes to build quality and speed. The only downside is that 8x burning is only true for DVD+R. And also, the drive is currently impossible to get hold of anywhere and the release date has been slipping for some time now. Here in Sweden the drive is being listed at about $270 which could be considered a little expensive since the good old Nec 1300 is available for a mere $160 nowadays. And since there is reason to believe that most people will use DVD-R media because of the slight difference in price, one might question the need for this drive at the moment. Just finding quality 4x media is a problem. True 8x DVD-R isn’t due for another couple of months so … what the hell. 8x capability mustn’t be the only reason to buy this drive or I think the launch will fail.
