Savage: The Battle for Newerth

Just finished the first round of play testing the final version of Savage online. Thanks to the good ppl at FLT. Might be a hit with the fantasy mmorpg crowd. The lag was really bad though. It would help if server admins set up dedicated servers. Plus the game is really brand spanking new so there aren’t that many servers up. I think I was playing on the only cracked server in existence and it had like 10 players max so … that’s the situation right now. Oh and btw. If you’re interested, head over to SUPRNOVA to have a peak.

The game is really simple and fun to play. Basically there are two teams. Humans and “beasts”. Each have a commander who plans the layout of the base, acts as the primary gatherer of resources, researches stuff and so forth. He can also give commands to other team members. Whether they follow orders or not is however a very different story. Anyway, the rest of the team plays a FPS (First Person Shooter), running around trying to hack the enemy to pieces and devour him with magic spells. S2Games calls this concept RTSS (Real Time Strategy Shooter).
The gameplay is skill based so it will take a while to level up. This you can do by performing any of the tasks in the game. Killing NPCs is an easy way to do it though. With each level you gain more armour, better weapons, stamina etc. Killing stuff also gives you mana and gold. The latter is essential because every time you are slain you have to buy your character and extra weapons or spells back. You still keep your level of course.

I think that the first battle left me wanting more. That is always a good appraisal. It was especially fun to see that I kicked everyone’s ass up to the point where I acquired the “Behemoth” character and also smashed the enemy base. I bet they never saw that one coming .. or maybe they did but were just too busy running the other way. ROTFL. Very cool unit indeed. Much more fun, although a bit more of a giveaway, than the human siege units.

First impression: 4/5
Maybe it’s just because I’m so goddamn bored. But there was something very appealing with this game.

This was another lesson in how to to completely lay waste to a perfectly good morning :)

BTW: I noticed that Nforce.nl has made some changes over night. The most noticeable being a ranking system. Hopefully the site will speed up now that they killed off most of the bot access.

How did you find the cracked server? Could you possibly tell me the IP address of it?

I don’t remember the IP. Sorry. And it wasn’t a permanent server so I doubt that it’s still online. Just joined it from the server browser. Took me a while to find it among all the legit servers. Maybe they have a protection against this now. Haven’t played it much since.

Also. I had a bad experience with lag. Same thing with all the servers I’ve tried since. Maybe it’s a fluke. Maybe it’s because of non-dedicated servers or too little bandwidth. Who knows. Too bad since it was a really interesting game. I mean, I wouldn’t buy the full version with the kind of experiences I’ve had. Kind of the same reason I had to dump Planetside. First impressions are important.
