A friend of mine talked me into this. Seems he is a big fan of Larry Clark and his work. Ken Park of course being the latest of Clark’s creations. And the greatest according some some.
This just wasn’t my cup of tea. I’ll go right ahead and admit that.
Lets get to the point. A real director can work with very little. Convey emotions without having to resort to cheap tricks. Larry Clark on the other hand should look for admission to the Dogma school of film. I’m sure he’d fit right in. This social realism with a touch of physical and psychological defects is starting to wear thin. I’m just glad Clark didn’t include any juggling midgets in the mix. I’m sure you get my point. The issues that Clark is trying to deal with are very important. That is just why I am somewhat annoyed that he chose this somewhat inaccessible and blunt form to present it.
Female lead Tiffany Limos was quoted saying she’d hope that “people will see past the nudity and intense subject matter”. I say that’s unlikely due to the crude portrayal of the characters. Even if we conclude that there is a story under all this absurdity, does anyone care?
I’m not surprised that this movie has rendered some publicity. It’s being offered through various channels on the internet right besides Faces of Death and various other grotesqueries. Ironically it seems only to appeal to the same type of people that are in fact portrayed in the movie. Birds of feather …
Another thing that is bugging me is that nudity and sexual acts are usually ok AS LONG AS IT IS “ARTISTIC”. Talk about double standards. Not that the sex in this movie bothers my in any way. There are however some OTHER episodes that admittedly disgusts me. More than I thought possible for someone who regularly visits sites like Ogrish and Rotten.
Reminds me of the time I walked out on Gummo. At least Ken Park is not as revolting. 1/5. Back to drama school for Larry Clark.
