Crap … DVD+R Drive

If you want something done right you better do it yourself. Why don’t I ever learn? I wont go into details but the situation is this: I ended up with a LITEON LDW-401S. That’s a 4x DVD+R/RW drive if you’re not following my reasoning. The minute you give away even a smidgen of control and start trusting ppl this is what you get.

Options: 1) Return the drive within 12 days for a full refund (excluding shipping costs of course). 2) Do the eluding 411S firmware flash.

About the firmware flash. There is actually a final shipping version of the 411S firmware to download at The Firmware Page (RPC1.ORG). Uploaded yesterday from what I can tell. Talk about timing. I’ve also dug up v1.1.2 of LtnFlash. But do I want to take that chance? If it works it would be great because it would save me time, shipping costs and also provide me with a superior CD-R/RW unit.
I have no info on the success of this particular firmware. I’ve browsed through some forums but unfortunately ppl are so sloppy when it comes to documenting their work. From what I can tell some have used beta firmwares with limited success. The problem is that I am on a tight schedule here and so I need reliable answers fast.

 Seems to be quite a few annoyed ppl over at CDFreaks who demand to know the truth as well: 401S to 411S - where is this topic?

Update:

And at RPC1.ORG …
LDW-401S into LDW-411S via firmware update ?

Also, Macnow has created a LDW-401S@411S Tweak Page (mirror) that explains the procedure in detail. He also provides a download package with everything you need (including LtnFlash 1.2.4).

Hmm. I’m gonna cut it close and wait a couple of days before I return the drive. This could be worth it.

Update2:

This is looking better by the hour. But I am not one to rush things. I need more positive input.
