Alien vs. Predator – the movie

Wow that was fast. Seems the filming has already begun. I checked up on this only a couple of months ago and then it was a dead project that would probably never leave the dustbin. But something happened … or rather someone happened … Paul W.S. Anderson. Goddamn, things are happening fast, there are two posters up already and also a final release date (2004-08-06).

The online community seems divided on Anderson’s work. Over at Ain’t it cool news for example they are constantly crapping all over him for some reason. Personally, I kind of like the movies he has made to date (and I have to admit I have most of them on DVD). We’re not talking Bergman or Kurosawa here obviously but I think that he has excelled within the narrow frames that he has been given (like Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil).
And it was a long time since there was decent sci-fi with a general alien theme.

The biggest question is how this will fit into the Alien universe timeline. I don’t believe that Fox would greenlight a project that would disrupt the franchise though. Since the cast holds Lance Henriksen as Charles Weyland (as in Weyland Yutani) it’s safe to assume that this takes place decades before the first Alien movie at least. It’s probably not a coincidence either that the same company would choose to build an android in the image of one of its founders (Aliens). Continuity so far at least.
