Finally decided to pick up the game. Even though I hate RPGs. What a pleasant surprise for a sceptic like myself. The game really rocked.

Just making a Star Wars game is a gamble. A big ass RPG that moves among most of the known Star Wars worlds and requires a story is even riskier. Lucasfilms hasn’t gotten anything right ever and Lucasarts has quite frankly pumped out one boring mindless excuse for a game after another.

But it isn’t just about how well SW:KOTOR performs as a RPG on the PC. It’s about how it fits into the SW universe timeline. It’s strange how a lowly game can put an entire franchise to shame, but that is what is happening here. For the first time ever in an encounter with this fantasy universe did I feel that there were more to it. More dark backwater worlds to explore, more depth, more history and less family friendly slapstick. No freakin’ snot nosed kids chuckling and toddling across the screen. Essentially the way the movies should have been.

Maybe George Lucas should give it a whirl and see how it’s done before he screws up yet another Star Wars movie. The keyword here is “depth”, whereas the movies have had neither depth nor width. They are but a coin in a fountain somewhere. Glimmering but insignificant.

I’m gonna have to quote IGN here. “Before you’re done with KOTOR, you will:

- train at the Jedi Academy which includes learning the Jedi Code and the meaning behind a lightsaber’s color.
- walk into a cantina on Tattoine where the bartender won’t like you…and the bounty hunters won’t like you either!
- find somebody’s lack of faith disturbing.
- explore the forest world of Kashyyk and see what ”Return of the Jedi“ was supposed to look like if we’d had Wookiees instead of Ewoks in treetop villages
- face your former master again after all these years.
- space-walk on the surface of a battleship”
