Brainwave stimulation .. again

I remember seeing programs for this end years ago, before the internet ever became widespread, in the good old days when a floppy full of shareware could be the hottest thing on the block. But enough of the reminiscence already.

What do programs like BrainWave Generator really do? We all know about EEG but can these binaural beats really change the state of mind for an individual or is it all placebo? A fair question after all. Not that placebo is necessarily a bad thing. Mind over matter you know. As long as it works, who cares HOW it works, right? But the question is still an interesting one. And do the majority of people exposed to binaural beats experience any change at all … and particularly the desired effect?

One question that always comes to mind when dabbling in this field is what the ideal condition would look like. I mean, how do you best take up the message, in this case the binaural data. I can directly relate this to the issue of subliminal messaging for example. There is still no consensus on the subject but most people in the field agree that subliminal messages _might_ be assimilated, or at least affect the general mood, but only in laboratory conditions. The reason being simply that the real world contains to much excess information and junk stimuli to concern the brain with and the message becomes too diluted.

There is nothing better than first hand experience though, so I’m gonna give this a whirl. In conjunction with a walkman I could really carry out some real world tests. Like not falling asleep in the library as usual. That would really be something. Haha. I guess this says something about how bored I am at the moment. And how much I like experiments and projects that exist for no purpose but to kill time.

I have unfortunately been unable to find any credibly research on the subject, apart from the obvious information available from the very same sites that sell the software, CDs and gizmos behind it all. I’ll get back to this subject once I do. I think it’s worth the time.
