This is a feature that I have overlooked for years, mostly so because the old Yamaha SCSI CD writer I had didn’t sport CD-TEXT features for some reason. It was probably one of the last models that didn’t support that. And a way for Yamaha to say up yours Sony and Philips.
Anyway, now I have smarted up a bit. I’m not a jewel case person and as such I never make labels for audio CDs. By using CD-TEXT on all the audio mixes that I do for the walkman solution I have one thing less to concern myself with. I don’t have do save a copy of the Nero file sheet anymore nor do I have to spend time figuring out what is actually on a disc by listening to every track in case I want to make another similar disc or edit the layout of the tracks.
Unfortunately not all players and software packages can deal with CD-TEXT, despite being years of age. There are a couple of applications of course that can get the work done. And those are also the ones that matter.
CDex - Audio grabber.
Exact Audio Copy - Better audio grabber. Supposedly supports CD-TEXT. But never in an easy way.
CD-Text Reader - GUI for reading CD-TEXT. Easy way to sneak a peak at an audio CD.
CD-Text Manager / Player - Strikingly similar to CD-Text Reader. But more advanced export features.
For some reason there doesn’t seem to be a way to get Winamp to read CD-TEXT. I’ve been searching high and low for a plugin with that functionality. The same holds true for Nero as far as I know.
At least no one can accuse me of being quick to adapt to new technologies
Sometimes I’m just terribly .. conservative .. and practical really.
