US Eavesdropping

Via FARK
The Register: Spooks want more Web-tapping powers

US ISPs will be required to make high-speed networks wiretap-friendly, if regulators approve far-reaching plans to tighten up existing surveillance regimes.

The Justice Department, the FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration are calling on the Federal Communications Commission to tighten up telecoms regulations. They are fearful that criminals could evade wiretaps using the latest communication technologies such as Voice over IP.

New services that resisted police eavesdropping would be prohibited and suppliers would have just 15 months to build law enforcement backdoors into existing services.

I take it project Echelon (1) (2) isn’t going well. Now these are some scary ideas, though I find it hard to believe the law will pass even in the US. And again, I doubt it will do any good against the real enemy. Anyone who has got something to hide will obviously use encrypted traffic. The only “criminals” a backdoor like this will catch will be the really crummy ones. And once the RIAA finds its way there, no one can be safe anymore. More than likely, these backdoors will also be a hacker’s wet dream. Generally, it feels like an insult to people who have been working hard for decades to create secure systems.
