Because of audio CD requirements I still have a small batch of CDR around. And that is it. If I didn’t have a portable CD walkman or a CD player in the car, I would have stopped using them months ago. It’s a legacy product that will take years and years to get rid of.
Anyway, in some sensible way I’ve seized to hunt for the perfect disc. I remember how upset I was when Kodak stopped making consumer grade discs and the HP brand vanished.
The senseless search for quality is over in this department. I do not believe that any disc that I’m gonna buy will break before I actually drop the format altogether. With this type of storage it is more a question of how you store the discs than what kind of discs you store the data on. For example I just had to toss one of my precious Kodak discs because I’ve kept it roasting in the car audio player one time too many. No amount of technology and quality control can ever replace end user stupidity and carelessness.
Since this time last year I’ve been gnawing away at a 50p stash of Verbatim Datalife discs. Now they are at an end and I could just walk in the nearest supermarket and pick up a 25p of Platinum (CMC Magnetics methinks). Extremely levelheaded for being me. No background checks, no three months investigation and quality control. Just to the point.
I wonder if this is truly the last batch of CDR that I will ever buy. Speculative, but it seems likely.
