In the kitchen: Granite Mortar

“Thai Stone Mortar and Pestle”

I was lucky enough to find one of these on sale at a local supermarket.

importfood says: “Made in Thailand of 100% carved granite, this durable high quality product is an important tool for Thai cooking as well as around the world. Exactly what TV’s “Naked Chef” has in his kitchen (he uses the 8″, which is large enough for making lots of pesto, tapenade and mixing sauces). We also spotted California chef Alice Waters using the same style on TV (Food Nation, June 2002). Use it to infuse fresh ground flavors of basil, sage, tarragon, garlic, pepper and much more. This is the highest quality mortar and pestle you will ever find. The great thing abou this tool, that distinguishes it from others, is that you can really whack it as absolutely hard as you can without any fear that it will chip or crack. Each mortar is cut from a solid granite rock and carefully carved by hand. You’ll know when you pick it up that it will last a lifetime–they’re very heavy and solid” ;-)

I have wanted one for a long time and pretty much expected them to go on sale because they weren’t selling all that well. Strange. But a good deal for me. It’s practical when no one else wants the stuff you do. Lets whack away …
