Just picked up this morning’s issue of the local paper and saw that the HIS Student Union has put themselves in an economic .. “situation”. Put simply, the construction of the new student union building strained the resources and then when it came to furnishing the place they went over the top.
I would have gleefully exclaimed “I told you so”, had it not been for the fact that it’s gonna be students (like myself) that cough up the funds remedy the situation. A raised student union fee is to be expected. And I guess those of you who have been following my blog ramblings know how I feel about student union fees. Granted the sum is minor, but the overall feeling is that you get very little if anything for the money you spend. Except for those among the student body who are active in social engagements and the various circus acts that the student union puts on.
I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if the funds just got squandered or disappeared with corruption. Too much booze and partying and too little of everything else. The modest insight that I have gained into this type of organizations through the years point to the fact that many of them are mismanaged. Ok, no big revelation I guess. But it’s still worth pointing out, again. And it’s daunting to imagine how many use them as a stepping stone and socializing instance in society to reach and acquire similar positions in real life corporations. But this is also old news. For the longest time I couldn’t believe, or I didn’t want to believe, that the breeding ground for the decease that spreads through society is right here beside me. Like a snake in paradise. Ironic.
I’ve been a student here for what, five years now, and I’ve never once set my foot in that cursed student union building. I find it foul, loud and conforming at best.
Maybe this is what I’ve been waiting for. A soft spot caused by the direct mismanagement of the organization. I doubt it would be difficult to rally support for an ideological crusade should I want to. Even if this is regulated by national law, the chain has to be broken somewhere.

Long ago, when I was a student, my friend Ray and I would go to the Student Union cafeteria once a day and spend a dime on a cup of coffee. During our half hour there every girl that was worth looking at walked by.
What a great memory.
