ABC: Rumsfeld bans camera phones in Iraq
Quoting a Pentagon source, the paper said the US Defence Department believes that some of the damning photos of US soldiers abusing Iraqis at Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad were taken with camera phones.
“Digital cameras, camcorders and mobile phones with cameras have been prohibited in military compounds in Iraq,” it said.
A “total ban throughout the US military” is in the works, it added.
Way to go. One would hope that the constant threat of being “found out” would force every link in the chain of command to be on their best behavior. This silly little ban is an invitation for armed forces personnel who still believe in the 1st amendment to step forward. Nice try Adolf. The time of dirty little operations is over. Shape up or get exposed over and over and over … at least we can all agree that the time for this ban was poorly chosen.
Essentially it is like the banning of camera phones in many recreation facilities, bathhouses etc. Why do they do that again? Well, simply so because there is nudity involved and people will end up being photographed nude sooner or later. The relationship is clear. And common logic, albeit simplistic, questions if this is also the case here. Abuse is rife and is no more questioned than people taking their clothes off in a dressing room. It has become common practise and is in fact institutionalized.
Edit: Did Rumsfeld ban Iraq camera phones?
Oooops. Seems someone just imagined the entire thing. But also that fiction is just about to come true in this case. At any rate, disregard the above …
