LifestreamReuters: Police Weed Out Art Exhibition
The exhibition, due to open on Saturday in the university town of Lund and titled “Counterclockwise Circumambulation,” was partially destroyed when police cut the plants to take them away as evidence, artist Sture Johannesson said.
The plant is grown in the region for its fibers and Swedish media said Johannesson’s hemp was not the type used by smokers. He could replace the plants, but said they had already begun to grow back. “They will have to come back on a regular basis to prune,” he said on Friday.
As it happens the hemp wasn’t even suitable for narcotic purposes. Ironic. And the police managed to invoke a law that doesn’t even exist. The really ironic thing here is that the exhibition had applied for and been granted approval to display said hemp plants. But some local “law” enforcer decided to ignore the facts and play up moralism. High-and-mighty principles you know. Maybe the local police should try some real police work for a change. And catch some real criminals. Certain things never change … outcasts and “enemies” of society are always given a high priority compared to those criminal elements that are too thick to operate outside of the sociological framework.
This reminds me of the endless attempts to stop a certain company from selling their legally imported knives and swords and distribute Mein Kampf. It’s a classic in this part of the world. The background is pretty much the same. One rogue individual within the judicial system who took it upon himself to stand above the law and bend reality to his every whim.
This kind of thing drives me insanely mad every time.
