China overturns Viagra patent

Finally a major setback for those that advocate intellectual property legislation.

Officials in China have defended their decision to overturn a patent on the anti-impotence drug, Viagra.

US business groups have condemned the decision, which they say has far-reaching implications. But some Aids activists hope it could spell good news for Chinese people with HIV/Aids.

I totally agree that this will have far-reaching implications. It could be the beginning of the end for medical patents as such. And as pointed out, HIV drugs might be next in line. It is simple logic really. It is morally wrong for companies to uphold shady business practises that in the end will mean the people die just so that a select few can prosper. And especially so since these companies are often privately owned and qualify as multi-national structures. I.e. they can often get to you but you have no way of striking back at their base of operations. Not to mention that most of these companies are indeed American …
As backwards as China might seem to the outside world, they still have managed to get some things right. And it is probably the world’s last hope in winning the battle against patents, copyright and intellectual property.
