Legal Split and Common Sense

Oh, what an uproar there has been after the verdict in the Anna Lindh trial. Why people even care is beyond me. It seems that John Doe is bent on blood and revenge … and media is obviously there to ask for pointless opinions.

“How could doctors be so divided on their diagnosis”?
Like that is a problem. What kind of nickelodeon fantasy world do people live in where it makes sense that opinions are always unanimous? Like there is a “truth” that can be sought after. It is nothing but a sign of a healthy system that people are indeed of different minds. And dare to speak up even though their views are conflicting.

“Mijailovic needs to be punished, in the future we should make it so that a mandatory prison sentence can follow upon psychiatric care”
Why do people not understand that the entire idea is about rehabilitation. If it was about anything else we could just let the victim or the family of the victim exact revenge like back in the dark ages. And eye for an eye, that sort of thing. Unfortunately, the majority is again under the mass delusion that longer prison sentences are the answer to everything. That is a sad thing. Not just so because it is a flawed view but because it might even move civilization away from the solution. As Nietzsche would have put it: “Convictions are more dangerous enemies of truth than lies”. The problem should be fixed. Nothing more.

“Mijailovic killed the Swedish Foreign Minister after all and …”
The pressure must have been enormous. A Minister after all. And a woman / mother nonetheless. One could hardly have chosen a more likable target, had one picked a basket of cuddly kittens. Just because of this it is important that the judicial system does its job and not rush to meet the expectations of the lynch mob and ignorant peasants. Everyone is equal in the eyes of the law. Period. I’m sick of the pampering.

Common sense prevails. And even against overwhelming odds. How often does that happen?
