Guantanamo: Mehdi Ghezali

Since being released a couple of days ago, Ghezali has kept a very low profile. His first public appearance today revealed nothing new to the story, except to repeat his rather disturbing statement of his time in captivity at Guantanamo Bay. He was quoted saying that he “had experienced both physical and psychological torture” and that “although I do not feel sorry for myself, I would like to tell my tale. After that it is up to you if you want to do something about it or just turn away”.

He also claims that his mission in Afghanistan was to study Islam and the people there. At the time of the American bombings, he rushed towards the Pakistani border where he was captured. It is difficult to say anything about the composition of the group. It is indeed likely that there were some rotten apples among those that tried to leave Afghanistan that day. Ghezali may or may not have been one of those elements. At any rate, his discharge essentially said that he was no longer a threat against the US. If he ever was. Clever lawyer penning. Ghezali will now most likely join in a class-action suit against the US government to seek monetary and spiritual compensation.

The s.c. "Guantanamogroup" in Sweden disagree about Ghezali being innocent. Many swedes are not convicted either…

Doesn’t matter what they think or what Ghezali has done. Because of the way the US government has handled the situation, we now face a much more dire situation and a more atrocious crime.
