Finally. The game has leaked. A couple of days early and despite a pesky copy protection (or so I hear).
The question is if the game will live up to the enormous hype? Chances are it will not. Looking back, no game to come out of ID ever excelled at anything but being visually pleasing. At least not in the last couple of years. And even back in the days of Quake 1 and Doom, one could argue that the success stories were all due to lack of competition.
The alpha demo of Doom 3 that I played was nice, but it’s difficult to say if the gameplay will keep you pinned for the duration of the entire game. Nor if the multiplayer mode is any good. Some will also say that creeping around narrow hallways is a thing of the past. Horrifying, sure, but is that enough?
- The most intensely realistic and visually stunning game ever created; with graphic fidelity never before seen in video games outside pre-rendered CG movies.
- Dripping with atmosphere and changing the look of 3D games forever, DOOM 3 features realistic physics, 6-channel surround-sound, and real-time dynamic lighting and shadows that create an environment of ever-changing fear and uncertainty.
- Compete in vicious multiplayer action where light, shadows, and a totally dynamic world can be used to your advantage or peril.

Postscript:
ID has done it again. Bottom line, it doesn’t live up to the hype. And on top of that I’m not very interested in moving from one dark and cramped room to another, killing zombies. Teleportation. Reload, repeat.
I really tried to like this game. I really did. But it is not a very good game. Beware of zealous zombie reviewers however. Most give this game high marks on pure reflex. It’s like watching a fashion show from the Paris catwalk. Realistically it will be exalted even though the precious rags themselves will never hit the street nor be appreciated by a wider audience.

Well, i guess everyone can have their opinion, but if your gonna bash a game, at least realise what the developers were going for.
Carmack wanted multiplayer to be personal, hence the 4 player limit. If he has 64 people running aorund, the game becomes impersonal, and the feeling of vengence is lost. He dident want vehicle combat, or uber alien weaponry, becuase Doom3 is living to the doom name, being visually advanced at its time, and having gameplay that satisfies the gamer.
What carmack dident want, was a Halo clone, which, sounds like you want halo 2 to come out now, in the doom3 box, you want a game that wont live up to its hype? Half Life 2. Ive palyted the leaked alpha, and i have to admit, its amazing, but Doom3 pushed it out faster.
Well. It’s still not a very good game. The facts can be twisted, everyone is entitled to their opinion. But the majority will be disappointed. Maybe we were expecting too much. And the situation that has arisen is impossible to solve. I don’t know.
Sure, gameplay is in a way very true to the original. Only problem is, people are expecting more nowadays. Some (like me) want a Halo / UT2004 type game. Others want some sort of System Shock / Deus Ex / Jedi Knight. That being said, it is still an impressive game. Just not fun to play. Especially in the long run.
This is starting to smell like Derek Smart logic to me. "Oh, I’m such a genious, my games are so damn good, and all you stupid people are just too plain to appreciate them. Don’t look at the final product, imagine what I was aiming for .. my implementation of code snippet X is groundbreaking … blah".
