Purevision Lenses

For a long time I’ve been back to square one with my original Biomedics 55 lens (by Occular Sciences). A couple of years ago I did try the Focus Night & Day (CIBA Vision) with limited success. Maybe I was expecting too much, I don’t know. My reservations with that lens have been documented elsewhere on the site I think.

I’ve been thinking of trying the other major lens for some time now. That being of course PureVision (Bausch & Lomb). Thank god for net commerce I say. Even as you think you have found a low-priced online retailer you find someone even cheaper. One cannot imagine what rates real opticians are charging these days but I assume they are ridiculous as usual.

Anyway, given the ease and cost of net commerce I took a gamble. We’ll see if I can tolerate this model better than the Night & Day.

A quick web search reveals that users are generally more pleased with the PureVision. Those that can still get it .. because here is the snag. The PureVision is not sold everywhere at the moment, because Bausch & Lomb was sued for patent infringement back in 1999 by CIBA Vision. Gotta love intellectual property, right? It’s not the first time a superior product has been vanquished using underhand tactics and the long arm of a decaying law. At any rate, the two companies have settled the suit since a couple of months so the PureVision will be back on the US market on April 17, 2005. Must have cost B&L a fortune but it was better than not selling it at all. The entire thing stinks. And it only goes to prove how much damage copyright style laws cause.

(2004-09-15) Lenses arrived swiftly. Will post more thoughts when I’ve had time to work, sleep and get to know them more thoroughly.

(2004-09-20)After some getting used to I feel they are probably better than the Night & Day. Just a little. Probably since they hold a few percent more water, even though it is far behind ordinary lenses. The problem with the lenses being plastered in the morning still remains, but is remedied by washing the face and being up and about for a minute or two. The outdoor usage is a little hampered, but again, at least feels better than Night & Day. So far so good. Hopefully I can use Purevision until such time that I feel a laser surgery is viable.

(2005-01-21) Still wearing the same pair of lenses. So far it has been working out really well. I still feel the Purevision lenses are superior to both my old plastic lenses and the Night & Day. So far I’ve been removing them over weekends, like every three or four weeks or so. No problems so far. And I’m still one of those people who rub the corneas / eye lids alot. Thumbs up.
