The Bush administration’s trade and law enforcement officials have trumped up yet another wide-ranging, totalitarian, pseudo-fascistic plan to take over the world. Now it involves putting an end to companies that manufacture and sell counterfeit goods. And look everyone, they even managed to throw in a bogus link to so called terrorism. “If you’re not with us, you’re against us” seems still to be the motto of the day.
The Bush administration also promised to step up efforts to stop fake goods from entering the country and to work with small business to help them “lock down and enforce” their trademarks, copyrights and patents overseas.
US trade officials said they would “name and shame” foreign companies that produce or trade in fake goods by listing them in an annual report and work with trading partners to build an international coalition against counterfeiting.
I need not elaborate my view of the matter since I have already done so on several occasions. My alignment is clear. Let my just say that these people continue to live in a fantasy world. A fact that could make life “miserable” for everyone. And it is becoming a problem for the rest of us that these issues are always raised and pushed by the US and the Bush administration. For the rest of the world, this could quickly become the pivotal point on whether to support the US in its more general endeavors or to turn our collective backs on a backward country.
