“E-sports” in the headlines

Who would have thought. But wait, why would anyone write a story about “E-sports” anyway? (who came up with the silly name btw?) So far no respectable analog news sources have shown any interest in the field and even scientists have shown little interest in so called social gaming. Well here’s why …

At first glance, Les Seules might look like an all-girl rock band – complete with sassy attitudes and fawning male groupies – but the Swedish septuplet doesn’t play instruments. They play competitive video games.

Les Seules, whose ages range from 16 to 25, are also known as the Swedish Girls of Gaming, a moniker christened by Sync magazine. They’re featured in a glittery 1980s-style pinup spread in the November issue.

If find the entire thing a bit ironic. A bit of a sham and more than a little shallow. And even if one can overlook the publicity hoopla, the make-up, the photo op and the corny cliches, they still play COUNTERSTRIKE! I’m sorry, but I can’t help but despise people who play that game. Even the debate for or against it is now academic since the gfx engine is terribly obsolete and the entire game has been deprecated many times over. Then again I hear people still play chess which is by all accounts out of date too.
And don’t get me wrong. I like cute girls in tight nvidia-emblazoned t-shirts. But even I have my limits. Things ought to be in the headlines for the right reasons. And it bothers me a bit that some people can get ahead because of the media hype. And the question arises of course if these are your average female gamers or just poster girls that nvidia happened to troll somewhere. They do seem a bit immature also, and after having spent a couple of years playing CS I’m not surprised. Maybe it does promote the scene but this just doesn’t sit well with me. Not one bit. If it’s hip and trendy then I don’t like it.
