What can one do to pass the time around here. Sci-fi series are always a welcomed interruption in the every day gloom. I think it’s time for a mission statement for Q3 2004.
Star Trek Enterprise Having watched most of seasons one and two on Swedish television I eventually had to move to BitTorrent. Swedish television got cold feet over whether to continue with season three and as such didn’t bother with the concluding episode of season two even. Too bad for them. I found that season three had a great deal more substance than either of its predecessors. And the conclusion and start of season four (”Storm Front”) was just … out there. I’d say Enterprise is on its way to becoming one of the greatest Star Trek series ever. Maybe that doesn’t carry a lot of weight with some people but that is just the way it is. Hopefully it will be around for many seasons to come.
Farscape The Peacekeeper Wars Just aired yesterday and I haven’t had time to see it yet. Nevertheless nice that they made this final effort to end the series once and for all. Says a lot about the sentiments that the series provoked really. In any case, it’s bound to be one of the major sci-fi happenings of this year.
Andromeda Managed to go downhill some more. Maybe people don’t even watch this series because as much as they complain about Enterprise I would have assumed they would be going crazy over the Andromeda story lines. Having watched about half of season four, I’m thoroughly disappointed. It’s silly, it’s shallow and most importantly the series still projects ZERO presence. I.e. the series has done such a poor job at describing the universe and it’s inhabitants that one either does not care or is soundly confused. Very “spacey” in that it lacks both mass and is not aligned with any geometric axis. It’s amazing that it was awarded a fifth season given what I have seen so far. Perhaps the story picks up later on. The first half of season four is any rate completely useless. Maybe it was all useless and I didn’t notice.
Stargate Is currently not airing obviously and will be back early next year I believe. But being almost halfway thru the eighth season of SG-1 and first season of ATLANTIS it feels as good as ever. Admittedly, ATLANTIS has been off to a slow start but I have the utmost confidence in the producers and that they know what is best for the series in the long run. I saw an interview where someone said that they wouldn’t make the same mistakes again and that they learned a great deal from making SG-1. I’m confident that the story will continue to unfold slowly and that the production team has got a plan on how to develop it over the next couple of seasons.
