Router reboots

I know I said the D-Link 624 Accesspoint / Router was working beautifully but I was wrong. Over the last couple of days it kept crashing more and more frequently. At one point it was unable to keep going for more than a couple of minutes before resetting / rebooting and thus dropping the PPPOE connection.

I tried various combinations of the D-Link suggested hard reset and hopefully it will remedy the problem. If not, I’m gonna have to replace it. This is just not acceptable. Seems like a bit of a gamble whether the highly unstable software powering the various D-Link models will work or not. The logging feature is inadequate and keeps resetting together with the internal clock. Switching off or on completely unrelated features might make a difference in the stability of the router. All in all it’s a big chaotic bundle that is almost impossible to troubleshoot.

Did all the resets I could think of. Doing everything to clear the flashrom and reflash. Still kept acting up. Then I read various threads on the matter and realized quite a few people were experiencing the same thing. Apart from the mentioned technique, they also talked about disabling logging functions, setting WAN speed to 10MBPS, disabling Super G Turbo .. those kind of things. I also got a hat tip that the router consumed far too much power, well above the 2A, 5V that it is being fed. My current best guess is that it is power related after all. And possibly that my transformer unit is malfunctioning .. or just not powerful enough. Disabling / throttling various settings would result in less power being drained and possibly staying within parameters. So, far, it seems to be working. Having disabled logging and using 10MBPS WAN, I’ve seen no reboots in quite some time. Could explain why I found it to work so well when I didn’t use WLAN during the first week. I must assume that the wireless part of the router draws quite a lot of juice when active. Hmmmm. Anyway .. fingers crossed.

Will contact D-Link again next week when I have more data. Just requesting a replacement unit will do little good if it’s a power related problem.
