Continuous hash fails

WTF? Even though I switched to the latest Azureus Bittorrent client (2.2.0.0, because the tracker required it), I am still getting massive hash fails. Started before I migrated from ABC though. So far I’ve had hundreds of megabytes wasted and tens of gigabytes stuck in limbo because it cannot complete. Somewhere during the download, one or two pieces refuse to download properly. It does not appear to just be the last pieces in the queue, that would have been much too simple.
There is a mention of this in the 2.1.0.4 changelog, specifically that “BUGFIX: Core | 99.X% / continuous hash fails fix”. But I am not alone in experiencing this in post-2.1.0.X versions it seems.

Removed the firewall (dreaded but efficient ZoneAlarm 5) - no effect. Changed a multitude of Azureus settings around - no effect. The Azureus Wiki offers little insight on the matter unfortunately.

I’m going to have to look into this.

Edit: I’ve looked … and been unable to fix the problem though I believe it is something localized to this computer, somewhere other than the Firewall, the Client (Azureus / ABC) or Windows in general. Since I at the moment have only one other computer operational (that unfortunately is not positioned to run 24/7) I tried to download the exact same file, using Azureus, that had the re-hashing piece in it, and presto. No problem whatsoever. That rules out any chance of a client, server or ISP problem as well as the remote possibility that my otherwise dodgy router would be somehow responsible.
This also means that ZoneAlarm 5 is back in service after a futile week of trying to find a suitable replacement.

Hopefully, I’ll have the last hardware bits for the Media PC any day now so that things will be back to normal. After all, I’ve had some really weird Torrent related problems with this PC in the past. That time it was complete system lockups that kept eluding me. And I never figured it out. In the end I had to move the entire operation to a second computer (the OLD Media PC).

Would be nice to NOT have a rattling piece of machinery next to the bed also .. so there are many reasons why this structure is preferable.

Use sygate personal firewall. It’s free and much better than zone alarm. They also have a pay version with lots of features, but even the free one is very configurable if you want it to be, or as easy as zone alarm if you don’t play with the options.

Won’t fix Azureus. I’m having the same problem. My install of WinXP Pro also won’t do compatibility mode (right click any shortcut or *.exe and choose properties. You should see a "Compatibility" tab. Mine is missing and 16-bit apps don’t run) so I have a feeling it might be something fux0red in windows. I’m going to do a fresh install and hope that solves it.

Don’t recall if I ever tried Sygate. But it’s worth a shot. For one, ZoneAlarm seems awfully bloated. For example ZA eats up 18-20MB RAM which seems a little much. Even so, one does get territorial with one’s favorite software suits and it (Sygate) would have to deliver a pretty good first impression if I’d consider switching.

Sadly, I never managed to track down the hash failures. I recall I did reinstall Windows but to no avail. Ended up using another computer entirely for bittorrent. The software on all three computers is the same and as such I suspect some sort of hardware issue, hard drive related perhaps. Though I never investigated that further.
