I just can’t help getting all over seemingly mainstream media events when I notice ulterior motives. One such event is the long hyped movie realization of the Doom computer game franchise. As pointed out last week, there were things moving and shaking on the set that would make any conspiracy nut spin.
From what has leaked so far it seems the movie might be set on another planet, however not Mars or its moons. The Marines are now SWAT and the hellspawn are people mutated by a virus. The Rock is however still in there and will most likely deliver an acting performance beyond crappy. One can also extrapolate that the set and props were probably downsized from space marine armor to pj’s. A la Starship Troopers.
I find it extremely provocative and more than a coincidence that we are seeing these changes to a more or less done deal. Whom will they satisfy? Certainly not I, and I consider myself to be the quintessential Doom fan, having been 14 when the first Doom game was released. And it’s not just that they’ll ruin the experience from a personal point of view. One has to consider why they are doing this. A PG-13 rating is one reason. Flesh eating demons wont meet that rating. Just as with so many movies lately, most notably AvP, they were held back by capitalist fantasies and PR consultants’ day dreams.
Another reason is most likely due to PC (political correctness) and christian fanaticism in the US, which as always, constitutes the main market for a Hollywood production such as this. Recall for example how the sequel to “Bill and Ted” got slashed from “Bill and Ted go to Hell” to “Bogus Journey” a great many years ago. I think it is difficult for secularized nations or individuals to imagine exactly how suffocating those christian delusions are for a society. Maybe they should have made a movie about that instead.
