AP reports that flag-waving is on the rise in Florida.
The law, requiring every Florida public classroom to display an American flag, includes a 3-foot-by-2-foot size requirement. Many flags already used in classrooms aren’t large enough.
“We already had flags in every classroom,” said Richard Wells, the district spokesman in Seminole County. “They just weren’t the ones specified by the law.”
I don’t know what is worse … that they already have a flag in just about every classroom (in Florida alone) or that these flags are too small according to some republican nut who dubbed it the ‘Freedom Flag Act’. The size of the flag equals the size of one’s peni.., I mean, devotion to one’s nation. Everyone knows that, at least in Florida. It’s interesting that jingoists, wherever you may find them, aren’t just way off track, they’re stupid, overbearing, exaggerating and overly simplistic too. The way I remember my childhood, we’d probably have hand painted paper flags (kids love paint) from time to time. The flag would have been mentioned from now and again. But since there were always different nationalities we’d probably have for example the Chilean flag next to it. And regardless of how often a representation of the flag was up on the wall it was never a law. We see no worth in an excess of flag-waving. Except if you have an agenda. Normal nations of sound mind and ideology do not do this unless they feel either threatened or have an agenda of increasing national sentiment and isolationism. It also depends of course on what nation we’re talking about and what their history is. France and Britain for example are probably bigger flag-wavers than Sweden, but their lament of great old days of global influence is rather benign. It’s past tense and rather quaint and everyone knows it. To have empires waving flags is a precondition to expansion and quite unsettling in many ways.
And btw, Cat Stevens is still a ‘terrorist’.
