EU software patents … dead?

EU software patent law faces axe. The European Parliament officially demanded a restart of the entire procedure. Now anything is possible. The bill could be axed completely or rewritten into something more humane. At any rate it will not end up even close to US standards. A lot of people have become aware of the subject and as we have seen today, most MEPs have sided against patents in this form. Possibly in time they will grow to reject patents altogether.

Though it should be noted that:

The new Commission is not obliged to follow the Parliament’s request and they might still try to “keep all options open” and ask the Council to adopt the zombie “agreement” of last May as an A-item without a new vote. However, even if they chose this path of confrontation, the Parliament would still have the possibility to restart the procedure anyway, depending on how it interprets its Rules 54-57.
