Herb Vest believes that true love should come with a criminal-background check.Vest is the chief executive of True.com, an online dating service that pledges to verify whether your dream date is a convicted felon or, worse yet, already married.
This would be an engaging but otherwise unremarkable business plan, except for one twist. Instead of competing head-to-head with his rivals in the business world, Vest has veered into the political world by pressing for new laws that would put True.com’s competitors at a severe disadvantage.
Vest has managed to convince legislators in states including California, Texas, Virginia, and Michigan to sponsor bills that would target rival dating sites like Match.com, Yahoo Personals, Spring Street Networks, craigslist and eHarmony.
Those sites would be required to stamp this stark warning atop every e-mail and personal ad, in no less than 12-point type: “WARNING: WE HAVE NOT CONDUCTED A FELONY-CONVICTION SEARCH OR FBI SEARCH ON THIS INDIVIDUAL.”

Brilliant. And only in America. The legislators are either blind or don’t care that new laws could be used as battering rams by mostly, as the article itself puts it, scrappy entrepreneurs like Herb Vest. It’s the same thing with the DMCA or the Data and Information Quality Act. Even a blind legislator should have seen it coming. Which leads me to believe they passed it on purpose and will probably pass this law as well. Remember, greed is eternal.

Greed, that is exactly what this is about. Glad to see someone gets it!
What does Mr. Vest think a warning is doing to do?
Dating sites are just ads.
Mr. Vest owns a background company, so maybe he is just trying to drum up business.
Mr. Vest give lots of money to our reps. So maybe they agreeded to submit this stupid idea to get funds?
Someone should look into that!!
Congressmen should look into Mr. Vest before they work to help his self interest.
Mr. Vest doesn’t know what he is taking about when he says he wants to help the divorce rate. He is on his third. Also wants to make courtship wholesome. Mr. Vest has been a womenizer, abusive, and cheated. He is being sued by his ex finance in Dallas for over 6 million dollars. Very interesting reading!
