Busy day if you’re into games. Not only one but two major releases. Yet another WW2 FPS and a rehash of the Driver franchise. As you can guess, despite the spit and polish, it’s not all good.
Driv3r (Driver 3) is the third installment in Atari’s long running series of driving games. The previous two games were popular but its not the year 2000 anymore and last year’s release of Driv3r for XBOX and various consoles scored mediocre reviews at best.
Driver 3 is an action-packed driving adventure game that recreates the excitement of a Hollywood blockbuster and plays like an interactive movie. Driver 3 stays true to its roots, incorporating the cinematic gameplay and gritty street crime of its predecessors with ground breaking graphics and three mammoth wide open city environments.
It’s probably not even Grand Theft Auto and it is certainly not Carmageddon.
Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 seems flawless enough. But enough is enough. After Call of Duty and Medal of Honor I’m tired of WW2 games. Especially since they are all more or less set in the same stage and geography of the war.
Based on a true story… Set during the famous airdrop before the invasion at Normandy, where Sgt. Matt Baker and his squad of 101st Airborne Paratroopers are scattered over the French countryside.
As the story unfolds, you must choose between the success of your mission and the lives of your men - your brothers in arms.
Brothers in Arms will immerse players in the historic eight-day invasion of Normandy — with unparalleled imagery, authenticity, sound and gameplay.
It is in fact so bad that the critical sociologist in me want to know if this is all part of some ploy to sell the idea of America at war. So, maybe you’re asking, does this guy ever let the conspiracy theories go? I’m not saying it’s a conscious choice, or a right-wing conspiracy but rather that it reveals a great deal about the mindset of the people who made the game, in this case the cowboys of Gearbox Software, Texas.
And it would be naive to believe that culture and popular media, even language itself is not a messenger to be reckoned with. What kind of observer would I be if I simply overlooked this.
Edit: And on top of that there was a game released 2005-03-16 called Act Of War Direct Action which centers around a “near-future story of a US elite force fighting an international plot to overthrow the current world order”. Can anyone say propaganda?
I do not contest that this is the way it has always been in a way, but things have been escalating lately. Ten years ago I wouldn’t have seen any of if. What would one do without higher education …
