And another thing that just came to me while reading a post over at Majikthise (http://majikthise.typepad.c...) ...

Just to get back on track of what this is really about. I.e. the right to refuse treatment. And then I recalled that we do give religious crackpots the right to refuse medical treatment, for example transfusions. How is that for irony.

I get your sarcasm. But you are waaaay off base. I can only speak of this case in particular since it has gotten such attention, forced legal amendments, become a political battering ram etc. And the point here is that the patient is more than weak - she is in fact dead by most definitions. Despite her appearance which I am sure has been made to look its best for the cameras. And it has got nothing to do with being in a coma per se. Because of her physiological deterioration, she has no chance of recovery. None. Zero. Nada. Short of divine intervention. Get it? It's not an opinion or "right thinking", it's a fact.

As for my personal comments and feelings I feel they can stand on their own. After all that is what your legislators say of their personal convictions.

One irony here is the hypocritical use of technology. Not all Christians are the same of course but there is generally a contempt of technology. Unnatural ways as many see it. They say it's about saving lives but the bottom line is doing things that they feel are for God alone. But keeping someone hooked to a feeding tube while their body rots away for 15 years doesn't seem a bit artificial. Very convenient.

The weakest among us deserve nothing less than death.

How dare they use up valuable resources that healthy, right thinking people can use.

Monsters!
