US police handcuff five-year-old

Three American police officers who were caught on video handcuffing a disruptive five-year-old at her nursery school are under investigation.

A video camera running during a classroom self-improvement exercise last month caught images of the girl climbing on a table and punching an assistant principal before police were called to Fairmount Park Elementary in St Petersburg, Florida.

The tape goes on to show the child appearing to calm down before three officers pin her arms behind her back and put her in handcuffs as she screams, ‘No!’.

Lawyer John Trevena, who has given copies of the tape to the media after obtaining it from police, says the officers went too far. ‘You have three police officers bending a child over a table and forcibly handcuffing her,’ said Trevena, who represents the girl’s mother, Inga Akins. ‘It’s incomprehensible.’

Of course the odds were in favor of a mishap with trainee officers on the scene but imo this is a telling tale of how the climate is in the US and elsewhere today. It’s all about tougher measures. The validity or degree of threat is irrelevant. Obedience to the system is a top priority. The horrifying thing is that this is so much bigger than just a five-year-old girl in Florida. But it does allow for a sneak peak into a mentality and a once hopeful society gone hopelessly awry.
