I saw a notice in DN this evening claiming that Stockholm had moved one step closer to a ban on Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs). Or “city jeeps” as we prefer to call them. If approved the ban would only be effective within the older city center … but it’s a start. With time it may be possible to get cars out of the city center altogether.
The main reasoning behind a proposed ban was that a) SUV emissions are off the scale, especially in the area of carbon dioxide, b) SUVs pose an increased danger to other drivers as well as pedestrians (the front and center of gravity is higher) and c) SUVs are bulkier and ill-designed to fit the relatively narrow design of an older city.
And of course, I must add, the bigger picture here is that the SUV trend poses a risk and a considerable step back in fuel economy and petroleum conservation.
