The United Nations General Assembly on Monday elected Swedish diplomat Jan Eliasson as president for the organization’s 60th session, which will open in September.Eliasson, who currently serves as Swedish ambassador to the United States, will replace Jean Ping, of Gabon.
The Swedish diplomat will take the presidency as the world body will adopt deep reforms proposed by Secretary General Kofi Annan.
A former Swedish foreign minister, Mr. Eliasson knows the United Nations well. He represented Sweden here in the late 1980s, and later served four years as U.N. undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs.
