The verdict is in. The Sniper in question was convicted of manslaughter. Even though many would argue that this is not proof enough the system works. For one, Hurndall (article archive) was a British citizen, second, the sniper was a Bedouin Arab, thus more expendable.
It is the first time Israel has pursued a case with such diligence, but it was only two months ago that another solider, presumably with a higher social status, was cleared by a military court of any wrongdoing in the death of British cameraman James Miller, also in Rafah.
Perhaps the most pertinent fact in this case is that Israeli officials for the longest time spouted the official version of events, despite numerous witnesses that they chose to disregard. The official version being that Hurndall was armed (he was not) and wearing camouflage (he was wearing an orange safety vest that clearly made him stand out). As for the crime - he was helping Palestinian schoolchildren evade the Israeli assault.
