It’s an overall slow sunday so I decided to do a sweep of religious activity in Sweden and tie together a few loose ends that have been bothering me for some time. First some facts from the otherwise dubious US State Dept’s “Religious Freedom Report” for 2004.
SWEDEN: […] its population is an estimated 9.0 million. […]

While not exactly a world event, I noticed that the local (Skövde, Sweden) incarnation of the Jehovah’s Witnesses are selling off their missionary and property. 1.95M SEK. Quite the bargain if you can only manage to wash off the religious stain.
Something hit me though when I realized that their missionary is only across the road […]

July 29, 2005 marks the one hundredth year since the birth of Dag Hammarskjöld (wikipedia), arguable one of the most influential Swedes ever and one of the ideologists behind the modern United Nations. I think that the question on everyone’s mind is whether Hammarskjöld’s contributions were really that remarkable or if his fame is rather […]

I can hear the crowd go Buran, Buran, Buran. And even with NASA’s latest upgrades to the otherwise hopelessly outdated frame, Buran is still superior.

Try to act surprised.
A law introduced a month ago banning the downloading of copyright-protected material without the owner’s permission appears to have had no effect on downloaders’ behaviour, according to Swedish internet providers.

Now the Recording Industry Association of America has had RPGFlims shut down because […]

Perhaps not specific to the US but certainly written with US culture and history in mind.
Myth #1: The Broken Window
One of the most persistent is that of the broken window—one breaks and this is celebrated as a boon to the economy: the window manufacturer gets an order; the hardware store sells a window; a carpenter […]

Via Boing Boing. Perpetuating the fantasy I see.
President Bush has created a new senior-level position to fight global intellectual-property piracy and counterfeiting that cost American companies billions of dollars each year, Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez said on Friday.
“Intellectual-property theft is a major problem around the world. We believe that it is costing U.S. businesses about […]
