Texas: 99 Years for Stealing Phone

Yeah, that seems about right. Not.

A convicted felon who went on profanity-laced tirades in court and told jurors he didn’t care if they gave him life in prison was sentenced to 99 years for stealing a cell phone.

Jurors deliberated about 15 minutes before convicting Glenn Alvin Reed of robbery Thursday.

Prosecutors had offered Reed a 15-year plea deal before trial, but he rejected it.

So even at the outset of the trial, Reed was facing 15 years in prison for stealing a phone and hitting the owner a couple of times. What had he gotten, had he been completely honest and on top of this rightly blamed the system? 1000 years? Capital punishment? No one should spend even 15 years in prison for theft regardless of how unsympathetic they are. Especially as the entire criminal justice system is just a charade to legitimise government, the use of power and to divert attention from the uncomfortable reasons behind crime.
